1954 Murray performs 1st successful organ (kidney) transplant between twins.

1955 du Vigneaud: Nobel Prize in Chemistry for biochemically important sulphur compounds & 1st synthesis of a polypeptide hormone.

1955 Salk develops 1st Polio vaccine. 

1955 British Journal of Haematology 1st published. Articles related to transfusion medicine featured.

1955 Conover synthesises Tetracycline.

1956 Wallace Coulter designs 1st commercialisable cell counter; Coulter Counter Model A.

1957 Minsky describes confocal imaging principle.

1958 Sanger: Nobel Prize in Chemistry for structure of proteins especially insulin (pictured).

1959 Min Chueh Chang describes in vitro fertilization in farm animals.
