1946 Sumner, Northrop & Stanley: Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovery that enzymes can be crystallized & for purification of enzymes & virus proteins.

1946 Gilman & Goodman discover 1st effective cancer chemotherapy drug, nitrogen mustard, after noticing that soldiers had abnormally low white cell countsfollowing exposure to mustard gas.

1946 BLOOD 1st published. 1st article by Cohn: BLOOD: A Brief Survey of Its Chemical Components and of Their Natural Functions and Clinical Uses.

 1948 Axelrod & Brodie synthesise paracetamol (acetaminophen).

 1948 Tiselius: Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research on electrophoresis, adsorption analysis & discoveries of complex nature of serum proteins. 

1949 Darrow describes 1st electrolyte-glucose solution for clinical use after using oral & intravenous rehydration solutions to treat diarrhea in infants.

1949 Harold Ridley 1st intraocular lens implant.

1949 John Emerson uses mechanical assistor for anesthesia.

1948 Bonsdorff & Jalavis report haemopoietic hormone produced in mammals in response to hypoxia & name it ‘erythropoietin’ (pictured). 

1949 Pauling et al describe Sickle Cell Disease as 1st ‘molecular disease’.
