1930 Landsteiner: Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for discovery of human blood groups (pictured).

1930 Fischer: Nobel Prize in Chemistry for research into constitution of haemin & chlorophyll including synthesis of haemin.

1931 von Willebrand describes ‘Pseudohaemophilia.

1932 Zernike describes phase contrast microscopy.

1932 Domagk develops 1st sulphonamide drug for streptococcal infections & synthesizes Prontosil.

1934 Wintrobe classifies anemias based on RBC indices. 

1935 Gibbon successfully uses heart-lung machine for extracorporeal circulation of a cat.

1935 Whitby & Britton author 1st edition of ‘Disorders of the Blood’, becoming the foremost UK textbook of haematology. Whitby & his wife play key role in blood transfusion services in WW2. Whitby serving in WW1 was severely injured, losing his leg; he received a large blood transfusion.

1935 Quick describes Prothrombin Time. 

1935 1st vaccine for yellow fever.
