FIRST WOMAN AND FOURTH LIFE MEMBER

Dr Rachel Jakobowicz, a WWII Polish refugee, accepts Honorary Life Membership. Her ‘undisciplined enthusiasm’ allowed clear identification of a functional example of an  Anti-Rh(D) antibody in Australia. She opened collaboration between CSL (Roy Simmons) & Australian Red Cross (Lucy Bryce) to determine the incidence of Rh-positive blood donors in Australia’s population, using an early anti-Rh(D) antiserum first described & published in 1943.
