Australian federal government taskforce established to review blood & plasma product sector.

Throughout 1990’s, allogeneic transfusion established as independent risk factor for adverse clinical outcomes. 

1st RCT on restrictive versus liberal red cell transfusion published by Hebert et al in NEJM. This landmark publication paved the way for 2 decades of similar RCTs but the 1st remains definitive.

Late 1990s sees molecular techniques introduced identifying SNPs encoding blood groups.Australian Red Cross Blood Service introduces NAT testing of blood donations for HIV & HCV RNA (followed by New Zealand in 2000). 

The Australian & New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) aims to engage with stakeholders in all areas of transfusion through communication, representation and advocacy.
