The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to Social Policy by Titmus published & becomes a landmark textbook for the social sciences.

The 1970’s sees an increasing interest in bedside 40 micron microfilters for transfusion to remove microaggregates & reduce lung injury.

Removal of leukocytes post-storage, pre-transfusion and pre-storage is an ongoing issue; heated debates from 1950’s-2000’s occur until universal pre-storage leukodepletion becomes standard procedure in high-income countries. A multiplicity of reasons supported this however, vCJD (least beneficial and cost-effective reason) ultimately becomes the driver of leukodepletion.

The Australian & New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) aims to engage with stakeholders in all areas of transfusion through communication, representation and advocacy.
