1908 Reuben Ottenberg performed first serologic crossmatch by mixing blood of a wife & her husband & observing for haemolysis & resulting in uneventful transfusion.
1908 Direct agglutination test with donor red cells & recipient serum progressively introduced as only crossmatch method until 1945.
1908 Moreschi describes antiglobulin test (AGT) for detection of non-agglutinating antibodies to bacteria & red cells. Discovery not followed up until re-discovery by Coombs et al for crossmatching in 1945.
